The Hawthorn Press was set up by Alan and Diane in 1994. It publishes both hand-printed and machine-printed poetry chap books. Alan Byford, as editor of the Press chooses the poets to publish whilst Diane is responsible for design and often also illustration. Books are printed in small runs. Any hand-printed books are produced in a limited edition of no more than 100.
Originally hand-printed books were produced using an 8 x 5 Adana hand press, which is still in use but has been augmented with an 1865 Figgins Albion, to give more flexibility. Machine-printed books are designed by Diane and digitally printed.
